This guide has been designed to help you keep your bathroom in the best possible condition by giving hints and tips on how best to use and maintain your bathroom furniture. It includes all the information and advice that will help to make your daily life easier.

The guarantee provided by bathroom fittings applies only if it has been maintained in accordance with their maintenance instructions. It’s therefore very important to look after your bathroom!

Of all the rooms in the home the bathroom has to be the one that gets more people to scratching their heads wondering how to solve a dilemma.

My primary rules of thumb to clean your bathroom

Give your product time to work

Prevention; prevention; prevention!

A few simple changes in the bathroom will save your hours of work each month.

Cleaning soap scum from showers and bathtubs is one of the most difficult problems to solve. Eliminate the problems by switching soap. The talc in bar soap causes the build up. Switch to liquid or a glycerin soap to avoid the problem altogether.

Acrylic baths or shower trays, plastic WC seats, plastic bath panels

Do's

  • Clean immediately after use to stop a building up of dirt and scale.
  • Use warm soapy water, Cif cream cleaner or Domestos multi-surface cleaner.
  • Fix dripping taps - this stops scale and lime scale build up.
  • Occasional use of mild bathroom lime scale removers is acceptable.
  • Use in accordance with manufacturers' instructions, rinsing off well with plenty of water immediately after use.
  • Minor scratches and abrasions can be polished out with a mild polishing compound.

Don'ts

  • Never leave soap shampoo pools - these can cause permanent stains.
  • Never let cigarettes/flames near - acrylic can burn and melt.
  • Never use household or commercial cleaning chemicals - a range of products such as pain stripper, nail varnish remover, household bleach, perfume, aftershave or strong disinfectant can damage acrylic.
  • We cannot recommend use of any scouring products or cream cleaners other than Cif, which is recommended by the British Bathroom Council. Acrylic is softer than China and can scratch.

Steel Baths

Do's

  • Clean immediately after use to stop a build up of dirt and scale.
  • Use warm or soapy water and rinse immediately with plenty of water.

Don'ts

  • Never use any bathroom lime scale remover/mousse or any acidic or alkali cleaner unless it has been specifically recommended in the manufacturers' instructions as suitable for cast iron baths.
  • Do not use bleach.

Vitreous China

Do's

  • Clean immediately after use to stop a build up of dirt and scale.
  • Use warm or soapy water, cream or liquid cleaner.
  • Fix dripping taps - this stops stain and lime scale build up.
  • Occasional use of mild bathroom lime scale removers is acceptable. Use in accordance with manufacturers' instructions, rinsing well with plenty of water immediately after use.

Don'ts

  • Do not put bleach in the cistern - this can damage the internal fittings. It is acceptable to use in the toilet bowl itself.
  • Never use strong cleaners or bleach in overnight.
  • Never mix different cleaners in the WC - they can react to give off poisonous gas.

Waterless

Do's

  • Remove all debris, if present from the surface of the urinal
  • Spray urinal surface lightly with a non-degreaser liquid cleaner
  • Wipe surface with a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge until clean

Don'ts

  • Do not dump buckets of water into urinal with cartridge installed.

Chrome fittings (taps & mixers, bath grips, WC levers)

Do's

  • Clean immediately after use to stop a build up of dirt and scale.
  • Clean with warm water containing a few drops of washing up liquid - rinse well immediately and dry with a soft dry cloth.
  • Occasional use of mild bathroom lime scale removers is acceptable. Use in accordance with manufacturers' instructions, rinsing of well with plenty of water immediately after use.

Don'ts

  • Never use household chemicals - a range of products such as paint stripper, nail varnish remover, household bleach, perfume aftershave or strong disinfectant can damage acrylic.
  • Never use strong cleaners or bleach in overnight.
  • Never mix and different cleaners in the WC - they can react to give off poisonous gas.

Gold fittings (taps including chrome/gold plated finish, bath grips, WC levers)

Do's

  • Clean with warm water containing a few drops of washing up liquid - rinse well immediately and dry with a soft dry cloth.

Don'ts

  • Do not use any cream cleaner or scourer - gold is a very soft metal and can be easily scratched.
  • Never use any lime scale remover/mousse, on or near the gold. A single splash can affect the gold.
  • Do not allow contact with any household chemical or bleaches - a splash of denture cream for example will damage gold plating.
  • Avoid scratching the finish - scratches can be a source of corrosion.
